Chirayata is a small herb (1-3 ft), growing in in the Himalayas at a height of 6-15
thousand feet. It has white violet flowers. Its root is used for medicinal purposes. It is
widely used for the management of infections, especially in children. Atisine, atidine,
heterophylline, aconitic acid, and tannic acid.
ACTIONS & USES:
Chirayata has the following major pharmacological actions and therapeutic uses –
- Bacterial infections: Chirayata has been reported to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. These include – Gram +ve, Gram -ve, and anaerobic bacteria. On the basis of its anti-bacterial activity, Ativisha can be used in the management of almost all types and degrees of bacterial infections, including – respiratory, urinary, skin, ENT, dental ophthalmic, gut, genital, articular, bones and joints, anorectal infections.
- Piles / Hemorrhoids: Chirayata has been reported to benefit in piles, probably by decreasing blood supply to the hemorrhoidal plexuses.
- Immune disorders: Chirayata has been reported to boost immunity. It is thus quite useful for patients with weak immunity having recurrent bacterial infections.
- Viral infections: Chirayata has been reported to inhibit the replication of viruses. It is thus useful in the management of viral infections.
- Fungal infections: Chirayata has been reported to inhibit fungal growth. It is thus useful in the management of fungal infections.
- Kidney disorders/damage: Chirayata has been reported to protect the kidneys against toxins and infective organisms. It is thus useful in the management of kidney disorders.
HOW TO USE?
Chirayata could be used as –
- Chirayata ghan tablet 600 mg (= 3 gm Chirayata whole plant powder) – Start 1-2 tablets, 3-6 times a day.
- Chirayata Dry Syrup – Start 2.5 – 20 ml, depending upon the age, the severity of the disease, and the body weight of the patient. On improvement taper the dose and bring it to the minimum dose required. To be taken just after meals with plain water.
- INFEXIE Tablet – Start 1-2 tablets, 3-6 times a day, Used for bacterial infections.
- INFEXIE Dry Syrup – Start 2.5 – 20 ml, Used in bacterial infections.
PRECAUTIONS
Nothing specific. Largely safe for long-term use.
